FIREFIGHTERS from across Teignbridge have been battling a major fire at a Torquay hotel overnight.

Crews from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh and Chagford were among the 12 fire engines who tackled blaze at the Trecarn Hotel in Palermo Road in the early hours of this morning, Monday.

126 guests were evacuated in the blaze that began before midnight last night but this morning firefighters were helping them retrieve their belongings.

The fire happened at the Trecarn Hotel in the Babbacombe area and nobody was injured, according to the BBC.

Fire Control reports: ‘Additional support resources are also at the scene including the Environmental Protection Unit, one aerial ladder platform and an incident command unit.

‘Police and ambulance crews are also in attendance.

‘Eight breathing apparatus wearers are using three hose reel jets, one attack jet and one safety jet to attack the fire which has broken through the roof at the rear of a ground floor kitchen area. The incident has been sectorised.

At 1.42am they reported: ‘The fire within the ground and first floors and is now under control. 126 guests have been evacuated and relocated to neighbouring hotels.’

At 04.27am: ‘Steady progress was being made and the incident was scaled down with pumps being released to just two pumps remaining on scene with crews monitoring for remaining hotspots.

At 05.58 am: ‘Fire Crews are assisting guests to retrieve their belongings from rooms within the property.’

At 10.40am Fire Control reported: ‘This was a building of three floors 80m by 20m, used as a commercial hotel, fire involving first floor and roof area, residents evacuated to nearby hotel, three rooms destroyed by fire, hallway and lobby area damaged by smoke. ‘
