THE dead 50ft fin whale washed up at Dawlish Warren should be removed by the end of the weekend, it’s been confirmed.
Overnight security has been in place at the resort’s Red Rock Beach to deter inquisitive members of the public getting too close to the carcass.
The giant creature was washed up between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, leaving the authorities scratching their heads on how best to dispose of the incredible bulk.
Concerted efforts will get underway tomorrow to remove the forlorn visitor to a ‘licensed facility for disposal.’
It’s thought the whale may have been injured by Channel shipping off the French coast last month before dying of its injuries and floating lifeless to Langstone Rock.
Teignbridge Council has opted for a land-based operation of removal rather than one from the sea after consulting experts from the Receiver of the Wreck as well as coastguards and Network Rail.
An animal disposal contractor has since been signed up to remove the temporary ‘attraction’ over the weekend.
The mammoth task will involve the remains being broken down, removed from the beach and driven away to a specialist site.
Cllr Humphrey Clemens, Teignbridge’s executive spokesman for coastal services, said this afternoon: ‘We are committed to safely removing the carcass in a timely and appropriate way. The work is planned to start on Saturday for completion over the weekend.
‘But we are dependent on things outside our control like tides and weather conditions.
‘This is a very unusual and unfortunate situation - and it’s not going to be an easy job but the safety of those carrying out the removal is a top consideration. We’re also mindful that people are interested in what’s happening.’
He added: ‘During the removal, access to the sea wall from Dawlish and Dawlish Warren will be restricted. Staff will also be onsite to keep the area safe.
‘In the meantime we would ask people to respect the cordon around the whale and keep their dogs on a lead.’
