ONE van driver was left wishing Tesco had raised the roof yesterday afternoon when his vehicle nearly got stuck.
Shoppers at the supermarket giant’s Kingsteignton store were surprised to see a van try to squeeze through the ground floor car park to make its exit rather than drive out past the front of the store.
One customer said: ‘A white van came whizzing past and I saw it head into the entrance to the car park. I heard a terrible scraping noise as it went through.
‘The car park roof gets even lower than the entrance. The driver must have heard the racket and I thought it would have to stop but the van just kept on going, even though some Tesco staff tried to warn him.’
She added: ‘It got out eventually but there were bits of van roof metal everywhere.’
A spokesman for Tesco said: ‘We are not aware of any incident, but it wouldn’t be the first time drivers have ignored the height restriction signs we have at each entrance.
‘We would advise any drivers of high-sided vehicles not to use the covered car park.’
