POLICE are investigating a suspected arson attack after fire destroyed a £24,000 children's play tower on Monday night. Firefighters were called to St James Place Park, in the village of Christow, just before 9pm. A crew from Bovey Tracey managed to put out the fire but the damage caused was extensive and most of the structure was completely incinerated. Police officers arrived shortly after to inspect the wooden castle climbing frame that had been set alight. There were no suspects at the scene, but police have cordoned off the area and are appealing to anyone who may have information regarding the fire to come forward. PC Ken English, the neighbourhood beat officer, said: 'The matter is being investigated as arson and I'd urge anyone with information about this crime to contact us. Someone in the village will know something and we need their help to trace the offenders and deal with them.' The castle was erected two years ago, funded by the parish council and various local organisations and events. Cllr Helen Green, who ran the play park committee, said: 'Everybody is devestated, I feel sickened that it could have been started by someone who lives in the village. It took a long time for us to get the money together and in just one night it has all been ruined.' Members are anxious they will now have to start all over again to stump up the cash needed for repairs. Locals usually take pride in the fact that there is so little trouble in the sleepy village, which nestles high up in the hills on the edge of Dartmoor, and are said to be shocked at the news. 'We hardly ever have the police up here,' said Mrs Green. Councillors have also expressed their disappointment at the news. Cllr Stephen Clark, said: 'It is a fairly new structure and was built especially for the younger children to play on. Recently we have had a few incidents of older youths using it late at night. We have tried to secure the premises in the evenings but all we can do is lock the gate. We are extremely saddened that it has been destroyed, especially for those children that got a great deal of enjoyment from playing there.' Information can be passed to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting reference JC/07/8989.
