Residents in Bishopsteignton are angry they are having to pay the price for cuts at County Hall in the shape of fewer buses passing through their village.

Devon County Council has to save £286,000 from its bus support budget so, when operator Country Bus offered to take on the previously subsidised 184 service, officials leapt at the chance to save the £32,000 it had been costing.

The downside is a 33 per cent reduction in services, a loss critics have said is unacceptable.

The fightback is being led by district councillor Alun Williams, who said: 'The reduction from six buses each way to four is a real and substantial reduction. The argument that there are alternative buses using the main road, the A381, is a poor substitute.
