A COMMON grass snake has been spotted in the Brook in Dawlish by visitors.

A family visiting from Exmouth spotted the snake while on a visit to the town over the Bank Holiday.

Darren Mclean had been visiting Dawlish with his daughter and granddaughter to see the town’s popular swans and waterfowl.

He said they spotted the snake after it ‘spooked’ some of the nearby swans.

They then followed it in the current and as it stopped by the bank of the river.

Darren said he was surprised and he wasn’t sure what type of snake it was but after checking online, found out it was a grass snake.

Described as two or three feet long, the grass snake is one of only three native species of snakes in the UK.
