Renaissance choir Voces will perform their autumn concert at Buckfast Abbey tomorrow, November 16.

Martyn Warren, choir director, said: ‘Five days previously the Roman Catholic Church will have celebrated the Dedication of the Lateran Archbasilica in Rome in 324 AD: the cathedral church of Rome, the oldest public church in the city and the oldest basilica in the Western world.

‘It played a large part in the musical life of the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century, and its musical directors included celebrated Renaissance composers such as Palestrina, Lassus, GF Anerio, and Dragoni.’

Martyn said tomorrow’s concert will focus both on music written by the Lateran’s alumni, and also on music written for the dedication of a church.

He added: ‘This allows the inclusion of music by other distinguished figures of the Renaissance, including Peter Philips, William Byrd, and Tomàs Luis de Victoria.

‘The result will be a feast of choral music ranging from four single voices to Lassus’ huge 12-part motet ‘Laudate Dominum’, in the wonderful ambiance of the abbey church at Buckfast.’

The concert starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm. Tickets are available from www.buckfast.org.uk/boxoffice, the Abbey Bookshop and on the door.
