Toolstation Western League Division One Weston St Johns 0 Dawlish Town 2 Dawlish Town clinched the League title with this hard-fought victory. Although they have enjoyed promotion success in the past, this is the first time that Town have won a Western League division since joining the league back in 1973. They have done it in style scoring 108 goals and gaining 102 points with one game remaining. Weston are a tough side on their own patch and they made Dawlish work hard for the victory. Two top drawer finishes from Carl Cliff-Brown proved to be the difference and puts him in line to finish leading goalscorer in both divisions of the Western League. The first came after 15 minutes from a cleverly worked free-kick from 25-yards. With everyone expecting a left foot shot from Chris Slough, Cliff-Brown suddenly strode forward and curled a right foot shot round the wall and past the despairing dive of the Weston keeper. A neat passing move provided a clear opening for Anthony Lynch but his first time shot flew over the bar. Lynch then worked a clever opening for himself but again his shot cleared the bar. Weston started the second half strongly and produced two dangerous crosses from the right but missed the opportunity to equalise. The nerves were beginning to tell and Dawlish were becoming more desperate in their play and Mark Rock was forced into a flying save to preserve the one goal lead. With 10 minutes remaining Cliff-Brown produced a goal worthy of winning any league title. A left wing cross was only half cleared and he met the ball with a left foot volley which flew into the roof of the net. The players were now able to relax and enjoy the final minutes and keep their goal intact. This meant that in the last eight games played Dawlish had the remarkable record of seven clean sheets and only conceded the one goal in the away win at Saltash. Dawlish travel to Shrewton an Saturday where it is hoped that the league trophy will be presented. Manager Myers said of Saturday's title clincher: 'It was a good professional job. We had to grind out the result and fight for it and everyone worked hard. 'A lot of credit should go to Weston, who did well and made it difficult for us.' Myers said he would again be joined by Adam Kerswell as they make a formidable partnership to take on Western League teams. 'We've got reallistic targets for next year and what we really want is a season of consolidation. We want to compete next year and I believe that we are capable,' said Myers. 'I'm proud of all the lads and am chuffed to bits. We've been at the top virtually all the way through and the lads deserve the title.'
