Teignbridge Council has said it will continue to issue fines to police officers if their marked patrol cars are left in the authority's car parks without a valid ticket.
The statement came after a £25 penalty charge was slapped on the driver of one such vehicle in the Woodholme car park, Buckfastleigh, last week.
The crew was busy dealing with an investigation in the town and had not paid to park.
On return officers found the Penalty Charge Notice which had been issued by a civil enforcement officer to a 'multi-coloured' Ford.
It said the bill would rise to £50 if not settled within a fortnight.
