What is an affordable house?
Again this week, on your front page, someone is cracking on about affordable housing, but no one's saying what price that housing should be.
Is it not time that our local council set a figure on what it considers the cost of an affordable home, set against the wages people take home in the area? By that I mean 'buy', not rent or part-buy-part-rent, but a small starter home so that our young people can get on the housing ladder and start to build a future for themselves, not to fill the pockets of the landlords, speculators or housing associations who, due to their position, seem to buy up all the lower price housing.
By doing this any developer, prior to submitting an application, would then have a realistic chance to get the mix of housing and the infrastructure correct first time, thus saving time and money resubmitting applications.
It was pleasing to see that Teignbridge has just won a national award for innovative use of assets. Now let's go on and win an award for common sense as the young people of Teignbridge are our assets for the future.
Our young people need houses now, that they can afford on the wages they take home. You will then have a happy and stable workforce that would then attract employers to the area.
I want to see our young people putting down roots here where they were born and went to school and building on the family unit.
