Wendy Sanders, of Broadway Avenue, Kingsteignton, writes:
I would like to make one comment regarding the recycling centre at Brunel Road, Newton?Abbot, and ask one question re the methane produced at the Heathfield rubbish tip to the north of Kingsteignton.
First, I think Teignbridge should take Mr Pilkington's comments on board re the need to relocate the recycling centre.
Altering the site's access will not change the fact that this site is too small for the amount of use it gets at present, let alone in the future. Surely there are real brown field sites (not green fields) around that could be made available for such a facility.
Maybe Sibelco can release some of its unwanted clay waste acres. For surely not every acre of the land is suitable for future housing.
Second, I would like to find out why we, the people who produce the rubbish that goes into the Heathfield Tip, do not appear to benefit in any way from the electricity produced there. In February 2009 two new engines were installed by Viridor. The engines were designed to burn off the methane gas being produced by our waste and turn it into a predicted 2.64mW of electricity – enough to power 5,000 homes. Since then the site has been enlarged to take even more waste, so presumably more waste, more electricity.
I believe that the average south west electricity bill (across the board from bedsits to mansions) is £504 per year, so who benefits from the £2,520,000 of generated electricity?
Definitely not us, the suppliers of the much needed waste.
