IT’S a tall order – but Who is this character filming an episode of Dr Who at Hound Tor on Dartmoor in 1974?
Tom Baker, appearing in one of his first scenes as the ever-popular Time Lord all those years ago, famously broke his collarbone in a fight scene at the national park.
The shoot involved the police box pilot seeing off a potato-headed monstrosity called the Sontaren, or some such futuristic creature.
Mid-Devon Advertiser photographer Arthur Kay caught the moment when the ebullient bandaged-up Baker returned to the set. Master Tom is now in his 80s and currently shooting a ‘lost’ episode of the cult sci-fi series.
Dr Who historian Richard Bignell is anxious to trace the mystery cameraman as part of his researches for a hush-hush feature on the legendary space-travelling hero which is due to be screened in the new year.
He said: ‘One of the reasons I’ve been so interested in Arthur’s pictures is that they not only show the events happening during the recording of one of the stories from that season at Hound Tor on Dartmoor, but he’s captured in one of his photos someone standing close by with an 8mm cine camera in his hand.
‘I would love to find out who it was and whether the footage still exists.’
He added: ‘It would be fabulous if we could put a call out to see if we can find who this mystery man was and whether the film still exists, forgotten in a drawer somewhere.
‘I’ve been trying to trace some of the original BBC production team who were there at Hound Tor, just in case the man in question was one of the crew. It would have made things a lot easier!
‘It appears that no one recognises him, so it looks likely that he was a local. It’s clear from Arthur’s contact sheet that there were a number of onlookers during the making of this story.’
Arthur died two years ago at his home in Kingsbridge. He was snapping away right to the end.

Filming at Hound Tor was hampered by bad weather. Dr Who’s companion, Sarah Jane Smith played by Liz Sladen, complained the elements had been ‘cruel’.
The crew stayed at Chagford for the duration of the filming before whizzing off in the Tardis for yet more appointments with fear and fun.
