Mr J Phillips, of Oak Lawn, Newton Abbot, writes:

It was disappointing to read the comments made by Newton Abbot Labour party press officer regarding the so-called 'pointless survey' undertaken by Anne Marie Morris, the Conservative's prospective parliamentary candidate for Newton Abbot.

I am sure those in receipt of the survey and who thought it important enough to respond, would be gratified to learn that their concerns have been noted and that the appropriate regulator should encourage them to reduce those bills.

I am sure also, that as a Conservative candidate, Anne Marie will be fully acquainted with the achievements of previous Conservative prime ministers and the history of her party and that they were indeed responsible for the privatisation of these utilities.

We therefore have to ask ourselves the following: Had private individuals not invested their own money in these companies, who would have paid for the modernisation of the crumbling infrastructure that so desperately needed to be replaced? Who would have paid for the clean bathing waters we all enjoy around our coastline or the Teign Clean Sweep, the benefits of which are appreciated by us all and have improved the wildlife of those waters?

Of course it is we, the hard pressed tax payer, and this would have increased enormously the huge deficit accrued on our behalf by this government and which will have to be repaid with interest, over several generations.
