Cllr donald Baldey, of Northumberland Place, Teignmouth, writes:

I was disappointed at the content of Dr Ian Maun's letter published in your paper last week. I have responded to his e-mails over the last two years and emphasised how frustrating the delay is but that we will be going to public consultation in the very near future on the various parking proposals that the parking sub-committee on Teignmouth town Council has produced.

Dr Maun is, or should be aware of, the efforts of a number of councillors who have devoted a great deal of time to this project. My colleague, Terry Falcão, produced the original report which made a large number of proposals, almost all of which were accepted by Teignmouth Town council and recommended to Teignbridge.

Devon and Teignbridge councils have come on board and, despite cutbacks in local government spending, have worked hard to progress matters. Unfortunately, in the context of 30 years of complaints and inertia but also the numerous laws and bylaws, progress has had to be cautious and slow. But if it's worth having it is worth waiting for. Remember it is as a direct result of Cllr Falcão's proposals and our work on the town council that we now have the £30 a year parking for residents in the town centre. Teignbridge recognised a workable initiative and implemented it.

As regrettable as it is, neither I nor Teignmouth Town Council are responsible for the police being unable to move a vehicle from in front of Dr Maun's house, and his individual complaint is one of the many we have received which has motivated the efforts to improve the parking in Teignmouth.

As for his claim that I receive £4,000 and expenses this is untrue. As a town councillor I receive neither funds nor expenses and all my work with the town council/district council/Devon council is totally voluntary. In relation to Teignbridge councillors, yes they do receive an allowance but many of them actually lose a great deal more than the annual sum received.

I have spoken to Devon County Council today and confirm that we are hoping to bring the presentation to the public during the first two weeks of December.

As for his statement that there are elections next year this is quite true, and hopefully he will reflect as to the fact that a number of councillors have listened to him and other residents, painstakingly produced reports, scrutinised every traffic plan past and present, made recommendations, secured funding for and carried out formal traffic surveys, enlisted the support of all three councils and have created a momentum to consult on a  variety of proposals in the near future.

We all want solutions, but ultimately the public will have their say.
