Calling all scarecrow builders – an organic farm needs you. Riverford Organic Vegetables is calling for scarecrows to be made to mark its new self-guided trail through the 400-acre farm, near Buckfastleigh, and to be entered in the Riverford Scarecrow Challenge, which will take place on May 29. Prizes are being offered for each category in the competition: child's scarecrow; funniest scarecrow; scarecrow on a vegetable theme; campaigning scarecrow and celebrity chef scarecrow. The prizes will include a meal in the Riverford Field Kitchen and farm tours. 'Scarecrows have been used for years here on the farm, but with differing degrees of success,' said Sam Miller, of the Riverford Field Kitchen. 'We can't help hoping that someone will come up with such a good likeness of one of the scarier celebrity chefs that no bird will dare ravage our newly-sown fields.' The campaigning scarecrow category is the entrant's own choice – the scarecrow could be campaigning against GM crops, factory farming, or any personal bête noir. To enter the competition contact Sam Miller on 01803 762074 by May 26, to register your intention to compete. The finished scarecrows should be delivered to the Riverford Field Kitchen by 3pm on May 29. The winners will be announced at a Scarecrow Trail Tea starting at 3pm that day, with the judging taking place at 4pm. All scarecrows entered for the scarecrow challenge will be used after the competition to mark the new farm trail. This new self-guided walk is part of the organic farm's 2006 programme of meals, tours and other events. Sam Miller said: 'Anyone who wants to eat here on the farm also needs to visit the fields. 'First-time visitors often go on a guided tour, but for those who have been here before or prefer to do their own thing, the new self-guided trail means that they can make a briefer visit to the fields and still enjoy our Field Kitchen food. 'Hopefully the scarecrows will just add to the fun.'
