'Awesome' was the general verdict on the martial arts festival that took place on the Den, Teignmouth, as part of Teignmouth Carnival Week.

British, European and world champions, along with black belts and masters from around the UK, gathered to deliver a two-hour celebration of the best that the martial arts has to offer.

'Choreographed set pieces with music, traditional forms, sparring matches, weapons, incredible breaking displays with people jumping through rings of fire to break boards on the other side, it was all there, and the crowd loved it,' said Paul Drury, who runs the Black Belt Academy in Dawlish, who organised the festival, along with his wife Heather.

'We were asked to do one last year and it was such a success, that they wanted us back again, so how could we say no?' added Drury.

'The star of the event was, of course, 13 times World Champion Zara Phythian, who also brought her amazing Team Elements with her.

'After such a tough day you would have thought everyone would want a day off, but no. On Sunday it was time to train with Zara at the Dawlish Academy.'
