NUCLEAR SUBMARINE ANCHORAGE
Apparently, the object of the Admiralty’s proposal to provide an anchorage for a nuclear submarine in Torbay is to collect cadets from Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.
The berth would be for occasional use, a total of five days a year during the summer, for between two and fourteen hours, depending on whether they arrived at night or day.
A meeting has been arranged with the various bodies concerned, including the Borough Council, the Fire Service and the Police, for a safety plan to be implemented in the event of any incident involving one of the nuclear vessels.
CATCH WAS AN ANCHOR
Owner-skipper Peter Vickerstaff and crew of the Teignmouth trawler “Elly Gerda” thought they had a heavy catch of fish when they hauled in their trawl one morning last week, eight miles off Start Bay. But it held a two ton wrought iron anchor, about 12ft long and a hundred years old.
It caused considerable damage, and two days were lost for repairs. They hope it has an antique value, to recoup the cost of the damage.
GIRL’S DEATH
A nine-year old Stokinteignhead girl patient at the new Devon and Exeter Hospital at Wonford was found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft on Tuesday. Nurses noticed she was missing from the children’s ward on Tuesday morning.
A search was immediately made, and she was found at the bottom of a service duct with head injuries. The girl appeared to have climbed from an emergency stairway through an inspection cover into the duct, which carries electrical piping and water supplies between the floors.
The Chairman of the Devon Area Health Authority has expressed his depth sympathy and concern to the parents. An inquest was opened on Tuesday and adjourned after evidence of identification had been taken.
BITTON RESERVOIR PLAN
Despite a letter from Teignmouth Town Council saying that a detention reservoir for storm water in Bitton Brook was undesirable, and representations by Teignmouth members, Teignbridge District District Council Works and Services Committee approved the principle of such a reservoir.
The Town Council gave their main reasons, that there would be an ever-present danger of flooding to Lower Bitton Road and First Avenue, and it would be aesthetically unacceptable.
WATER BOARD PAY-OUT
Members of South West Devon Water Board are not entitled to attendance allowances, such as members of Local Councils received but, it was announced by Managing Director Mr. Roy Slocombe, that the 15 members of the Board received a total of approximately £4,000 in travelling and subsistence expenses during the year 1974 - 1975.
LOYAL ORDER OF THE MOOSE
As has been their custom at Whitsuntide, the Teignmouth Branch of the Order distributed 26 full and attractively packed gift parcels amongst a similar number of well-deserving local residents. It was announced by the National Convention that the total amount received from the appeal for cystic fibrosis research was £19,592, of which the Teignmouth Branch contributed £3,700.
