CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

Mr. John Hicks, bandmaster of the Newton Abbot Town Band, has replied. He did not know that the Salvation Army Band traditionally played by the Christmas tree on Greenslade’s Corner on the Saturday before Christmas, and added that if he had been asked to move in a reasonable manner, he would have moved elsewhere. He had a permit from Teignbridge Council for a collection to buy instruments for the young people in the band, “and if that’s not charity, I don’t know what is.”

WAR MEMORIAL

On a bright Saturday morning, some 25 members of Bishopsteignton WI came to Clanage Cross to plant a special tree, a Liquidambar styraciflua , famous for its brilliant red autumn colouring. Mrs. J. Bradsell and Mrs. S. Atkinson were President and Secretary in 1973 when the project was started. Mrs. E. Kirkland, current President, made a short speech, dedicating the tree to the village.

OIL PROTECTION VESSEL

The vessel which will be stationed in Torbay will be available for the Teignbridge coast as well, to protect it against oil pollution from any tanker spillage. There has not been any long term “parking” of idle tankers since early September, but that area is important in the long term. Shell are to provide an anti-pollution vessel on permanent stand-by at Brixham, available at half an hour’s notice, with 1,000 gallons of concentrated dispersant in an eight hours operation.
