“STORM” PUPPY CHAMPION
An eleven-month old Dalmatian is winning awards all over the the country, from the Royal Cornwall to Kenilworth. He is owned by 7-year old Nicola Ball from Bishopsteignton. Just now, she is unable to attend school (Convent of Notre Dame) as she has chickenpox.
THE SHIP THAT TRIED TO GIVE UP DRINK
The hilarious account tells of the “Anne”, built in 1803, registered at Exeter, owned by Elias Brewer of Teignmouth. He had a steady trade in clay and coal, until he had a contract to fetch port wine from Porto, under Captain Knowles.
Unfortunately, the crew did a quality check - excellent - and the other casks too. There followed a list of missed harbours, run-agrounds and expensive rescues. Elias had to gallop round the country to find his ship.
He decided to limit his trade to salt and fish between Liverpool and Newfoundland (sober), but another contract called him to Porto. Unfortunately, a French privateer took the crew prisoner, the cargo and all the documents. A British naval cutter found her adrift. Eventually she resumed her wine trade, but was never heard of again.
NEW JAZZ GROUP
Some of Devon’s most respected musicians attended and cheered the debut of an outstanding new jazz quartet, at what was virtually a private showing on Sunday. This unique event occurred at Teignmouth’s “Harmony Inn” - the "Talbot” - and organised by the guvnor, Gene Claybroook. “I have musicians among my regulars. The quartet wanted a venue for their first performance.”
All are members of the Carl Anthony Show Band, who have formed their own modern jazz group under the leadership of Noel Sadler, baritone sax and flute, and include Larry Barton, double bass, Andy Flack, piano, and drummer Mike Sayers.
