SOME politicians were talking on the BBC politics live the other week, saying, people get angry if the other side don’t agree with them, and they don’t come up with a plausible alternative.

This happens as much in climate change as anything else.

We all need to  keep an open mind until proven when it comes to science as well as politics – that’s what research is all about, and the debate should never be rude. This week I will present all the reasons why a planet is hot or cold and not double guess everything.

There is also much talk and worry by many that with gigabytes of information streaming every second from all different sides on every subject under the Sun, that we are all drowning with over-load and much of it just opinions.

It’s now nearly imposible to get the truth or the correct answers. This is a worrying situation for the whole world.

Just one subject with many diverse views is climate change. Therefore, with the space provided, let’s put some facts down and not come up with criticism, but give the received science view.

A planet (the Earth) gets its heat from its star; the Sun. The amount of heat is determined by the energy output level of the Sun; the distance from the Sun, and as proved without any doubts, the atmosphere gas mixes.

There is for the Earth two other factors that can change the climate on Earth – the tilt angel of the earth to the Sun and the change of the orbit distance from the Sun.

Also, there has not been an above average volcanic action sustained for years. At this time, none of the above reasons come into play, as thankfully we are in the middle of those very long cycles.

Also, our Sun is in the middle of its age cycle and is classed as a steady state ‘M’ Sun. (Don’t get fooled by Sunspots, they are nothing to do with climate change as first muted).

Therefore, we only have one variable left which has indeed changed over the last 170 years, and that is an increase in carbon dioxide by a whopping 50%.

We know from experiments long ago and present day, that C02 and water vaper and other green house gases like methane, act like a blanket on a bed, keeping the heat in; a bit like the clouds at night means a warmer night in winter-time.

When looking at this whole subject, we know other things make it warmer as well, like the melting of ice due to the white colour turning dark, which in turn absorbs more heat. But that is not making it hotter on its own, but as a feed back consequence to a hotter atmosphere.

I will finish by saying, if it’s not Co2 making it hotter, then we need an answer to what is it?

If anyone does not think or believe that the 1.2 C degrees warming since 1830 is due to the change in the Co2 concentrations in the atmosphere, then another scientifically proved reason must be given for the continued rise in temperature.

Reading many scientific articles, I have not come across any other substantiated reason put forward by anyone in the field – how could there be, we know all the reason for a hot or cold planet. By process of elimination, it has to be the Co2.

The debate on getting to net zero on carbon, is to miss the point. It’s about stopping the rise in temperature with more Carbon dioxide being release than is escaping away from Earth’s gravity into outer space; as it has always done. (90 tonnes per day of total atmosphere including C02 is blown away by the solar winds.)

At this time Co2 is escaping less than we are releasing the Co2 part of the gases and the sequestration into the oceans and rocks; it’s the change in the balance that determines the direction of travel to a higher or lower temperature.

We are travelling in the wrong direction!
