KINGSTEIGNTON Bowls Club welcomed two sets of players in the Over 55 league on a lovely sunny morning on June 11.

First up it was the X Division team who hosted bowlers from Bovey Tracey. 29-47 to Bovey (0-8 pts). Ian Westaway 16, N Fletcher 26; Brian Smith 13, K Lockett 21.

This was an unfortunate day for KBC's X Div side, who don't usually expect to go down to the opposition on both rinks.

It seemed earlier on that the Westaway/Fletcher game could have gone either way. However, Bovey Tracey, who have some very steady bowlers, slowly pulled away and never looked back.

Bovey players seemed to 'find' the pace and line of KBC's all-weather surface fairly quickly and it transpired that some of them are pretty used to bowling on a carpet weave surface.

Things were more straightforward on the Smith/Lockett rink where the Bovey bowlers went into a commanding lead early on. There was a lack of recent practice from a couple of KBC bowlers and it showed during this match.

It was one of those days for KBC on this rink where nothing seemed to go their way either in bowling performance or luck, with the luck element often playing a major part. It does tend to follow that a team well down against the opposition never seems to get any luck at all. Today was one of those days.

Meanwhile, KBC 'Y' bowlers entertained Over 55 bowlers from Chudleigh on the same morning and fared much better. 71-15 to KBC (8-0 pts). Martin Redfern 44, R Harvey 8; Bill Beech 27, K Addey 7.

On a lovely day for bowling, with a light breeze to keep things fresh, the action lived up to the billing and was played in a relaxed and friendly manner.

In the Redfern/Harvey rink, KBC started with a 4-shot end but then stuttered for five ends before they scored again. Once they did, they dominated the game till the end.

Sadly for the Chudleigh players, they never really got to grips with the artificial surface. On the KBC captain's rink (Bill Beech), his opposition also struggled with their weight, although had reasonable success with their line, but one without the other is not enough to win a game.

The KBC bowlers put in some fine woods to keep Chudleigh under pressure.

Many thanks to KBC member Lizzy Maynard for organizing refreshments at half time and providing cakes for the X team. Bill Beech's baking efforts of carrot and fruit cake went down well with the Y team and the Chudleigh lads- thanks to everybody for the nice comments.

It was a fine morning with a social and friendly opposition.
