COMPETITION finals week got off to a fine start on a hot and sunny Bank Holiday Monday at Chudleigh Bowling Club, as 36 bowlers took to the green to compete for the mixed triples trophy.
Played all day on a round-robin basis, the teams played six games of six ends and at the start of the final round of games, any one of six teams could win.
At the end of the day’s play, six teams finished on 12 points and the trophy was decided on shot difference. The successful team was Jane Badcock, Steve Hervin and Nick Goddard, who won by one shot from Margie Wilson, Andy Fletcher and Doug Neely.
Fast forward a few days and a massive change in the weather disrupted the best laid plans.
On Saturday morning, five competitions were successfully concluded before the rain brought about postponements.
In the ladies’ handicap Kate Reader beat Penny Hale 22-13, in the men’s handicap Steve Watkin defeated Andy Sinden (23) 21-21, in the novice singles Aaron Hiscock defeated Simon Daly 22-11, in the ladies’ 2-wood Margie Wilson defeated Ann-Marie Stanley and in the men’s pairs, Alan Bazley and Tony Marshall defeated Peter Jackson and Richard Partridge 30-9.
On Sunday morning, three matches were abandoned partway through due to heavy rain but in the afternoon, the mixed pairs was completed with Kate Reader and Dave Luxton defeating Jill Glazer and Steve Hervin 22-13.
Finally, in the ladies’ pairs, Margie Wilson and Kate Reader defeated Ann-Marie Stanley and Jude Wilson on an extra end, Andy Sinden won through a very tight match in the open singles against Dave Luxton and Dave Smethurst defeated Steve Edwards in the men’s 2-wood, leaving the green free for the club championships to be played out.
In the men’s championship, Andy Sinden defeated Dave Smethurst, whilst, in the ladies’, Margie Wilson defeated Jude Wilson.
