AMONGST the recent outings for Abbrook Park Bowls Club was a men’s county match against Chudleigh.
Jeff Sharland, Andrew Wilkinson, Norrie Wilson and skip Kevin Taylor were the quartet playing at home and they finished with a 12-shot advantage. With the away team of Phil Lannon, Ron Milne, Tom Archer and skip Rob Horrell three-up, Chudleigh waved the white flag to concede the match.
A few days later, there was then another county clash, this time against Bitton Park.
John Barry, Geoff Walling, Dave Woods and skip Rob Horrell were beaten 10-22 on rink one whilst on rink two, Phil Lannon, Phil Stanley, Jim Coker and skip Norrie Wilson won 22-20.
Rink three’s Jeff Sharland, Phil Irish, Alan Sanders and skip Kevin Taylor had a very tight game and won 20-14, but Abbrook still had an overall deficit at this point.
Rink four, of Ron Milne, Nigel Coombes, Andrew Wilkinson and skip Tom Archer, made the difference, giving the team a three-shot victory.
To kickstart the Grace Mathews knockout, Abbrook Park visited Dawlish Marina and with wins across the 2-wood and 4-wood singles, followed by the pairs, the sides shook hands at a 5-0 win.
Abbrook’s MDL1men’s “A” team travelled to Starcross for an evening fixture. After a good start to the season, this was going to be a good test having lost twice to this opponent last season.
John Berry, Geoff Walling, Dave Woods and skip Rob Horrell secured a 15-24 win. Phil Lannon, Phil Stanley, Jim Coker and skip Norrie Wilson had a nip and tuck first half to their rink then Starcross took charge, Norrie and co going down 27-12.
Jeff Sharland, Phil Irish, Alan Sanders and skip Kevin Taylor ran out winners 13-20. Ron Mine, Nigel Coombes, Andrew Wilkinson and skip Tom Archer also started well and were steady, keeping three or three shots ahead. Abbrook then lost their concentration and the lead but in the last three ends, regained their composure winning 19-20. Abbrook overall winners taking 12 of the 14 points.
To end the month, Abbrook held a club competition weekend and BBQ and there was a great turnout, with over 50 members, family and friends. The men contested their triples competition on Saturday with quarter finals in the morning and semis in the afternoon, the ladies on the Sunday.
After some close matches, the men’s final in August will be Dave Woods, Jeff Sharland and Mike Russell v Phil Stanley, Alan Furner and Jim Coker. And the ladies triples final Pat Loft, Jocelyn Schirn and Helen Lannon v Jean Stanley, Julia Hearne and Jocelyne Krummen.

Janis Preston and Jean Stanley catering and clearing up and last but not least, Phil Lannon and Mike Meathral in the bar and Jeff Sharland for preparing the green.
Without their help, this great event could not take place.
Finally to the ladies “B” SDL4 action on June 4. An enjoyable afternoon at home against Paignton and a win for Abbrook. Jos Schirn, Carol Howard and skip Pat Loft 19-16. Sue Mukherjee, Marcia Brown and skip Janet Barr 16-22. Helen Meager, Claire Lloyd and skip Liz Rollason 23-13. Abbrook Park won eight points to two.
