IPPLEPEN

In DECEMBER 2024, Ipplepen Bowling Club lost one of its long-time members when, sadly, Dennis Squires passed away.

Dennis loved bowls and was a true ambassador for the sport, setting a great example to all with his friendly manner.

John Farley, a good friend of Dennis, donated a trophy to the club in his memory and so now was the time for the inaugural Dennis Squires memorial trophy. It was planned to be held near to what would have been his birthday, and it was an honour and privilege to have his son Graham in attendance.

A “Yardstick” game was played over 18 ends and at the end club captain Shirley Northwood was on hand to congratulate the winners, who had a score of 61.

Pictured, from left to right, are winning trio Malcolm Douglas, Joan Preston and Brian Wallace, with Graham Squires presenting the trophy.

The afternoon concluded with a Devonshire cream tea, which had always been a favourite with Dennis, with thanks to Carole Russell and Christine Brook, who served this to all members. It had been a great afternoon in honour of such a great friend and club member, and an event which will continue to feature in Ipplepen Bowling Club’s calendar every year, so that Dennis is never forgotten.

Anyone is welcome to get involved at Ipplepen Bowling Club, there is a social evening of bowls every Monday from 6:30pm and for more information, contact club secretary Shirley on 01803 813980.

KINGSTEIGNTON

Kingsteignton ladies travelled to Paignton Torbay B.C. on July 8 in the South Devon Ladies League.

23-33 to KBC (0-10 pts). S. Wallbank 13, Margaret Sole 15; J. Giles 10, Sue Hancock 18.

Only two teams turned out as Paignton Torbay were unable to provide a third team. It was a nice, friendly match and it proved to be a close result in KBC’s favour.

Captain Margaret Sole said she was so pleased with the way her team played and only playing on two rinks seemed to have brought them luck, particularly away on an unfamiliar grass lawn.

The following day, it was the turn of the over 55s X team who played at Buckfastleigh and won 27-35 (2-6 pts). S. Shaw 7, John Saunders 21; K. Murray 20, Ian Westaway 14.

This match, away on Buckfastleigh’s lawn, was played in beautiful weather conditions and proved to be very competitive on both rinks throughout the whole morning.

It was then another glorious day when KBC entertained Totnes Over 55’s Y Div. There was little wind, which made it a hot one and it affected players on both sides. 62-19 to KBC (6-2 pts). Martin Redfern 54, K. Deadman 4; Mike Riley 8, C Watts 15.

On the Redfern/Dedman rink, KBC had a stormer of a game and never looked behind them. The other rink didn’t go so well for KBC with the boys struggling with form earlier on.

However, by the eighth end, they had their noses in front, leading 6-4, only for it to go awry in Totnes’ favour. The guys said that none of them played very well.

KBC captain Billy Beech said it was six more useful points overall and well done to Totnes for such a friendly and enjoyable match.

BOVEY TRACEY

THIS was another busy week for Bovey with matches in a variety of competitions. Beginning with the teams, there were two matches in the men's Mid Devon League producing opposing results.

There were a couple of disappointing results for Bovey in the men's over 55s leagues. In the X division, Bovey, in second place in the league, hosted Starcross, the team leading the division, which made their defeat by eight league points to nil even harder to take.

It was a similar story in the Y division where Bovey lost eight points to nil at Newton Abbot. D Cosway, A Chew, K Breame 13-23; A Cromwell, D Wraighte, A Franklin 8-21.

A couple of away mixed triples friendlies resulted in two wins for Bovey, by 68 shots to 63 at Topsham and by 54 shots to 41 at Paignton Torbay.
