BOVEY Tracey Bowling Club’s finals were greeted with contrasting weather on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7, September.
In Saturday sunshine, Phil Joy won a high-class men’s championship match by 21 shots to 17 against Roger Bailey. Roger started well but was eventually pegged back by Phil who has now win this title three seasons in a row.
The ladies were less fortunate with the weather on Sunday but nobody could rain on Heidi Call’s parade. She took on mum Sue Johnson and won 21-15, adding to her handicap victory from the day prior.
In the men's 2-wood final, Chris Shorland was a deserving winner, proving too strong on the day for Kenny Breame, 17-44. The ladies' 2-woods was a repeat of their championship final with the reverse result, Sue triumphing over daughter Heidi 14-10.
The men's handicap involved Alastair Franklin, playing the first of three finals over the weekend, against the aforementioned Roger, playing his first of two. After Alastair's four-shot advantage was cancelled out by Roger on the first end, the match was evenly balanced until the latter stages with Roger running out the winner, 21-13.
Heidi had to concede a four-shot advantage to Sarah Breame in the ladies' handicap but slowly pulled ahead after halfway to win by 19 shots to 13.
The men's drawn pairs was won by Tyler Smith and Les Hignett, who were on top throughout their match against Chris Young and Kenny Breame, prevailing 27-15. Especially well done to Tyler who only started playing bowls this season.
In the mixed drawn pairs, Les Hignett and Heidi Call proved too strong a pairing for Jule Chew and Alastair Franklin, winning by 24 shots to 13 in a match played in the rain throughout.
Finally, Alastair Franklin finally triumphed in the Ley Cup at the third attempt, winning by two sets to one against Tyler Smith in a closely contested match.
