ON MAY 7, both X & Y squads for Kingsteignton Bowls Club over 55s were present.

Firstly, the X div team were at home and entertained Buckfastleigh BC,

60-18 to KBC (8-0 pts). Ian Westaway 31, S Shaw 11; John Saunders 29, K Murray 7.

This match was played in lovely weather and although competitive, it was in a very friendly spirit.

Kingsteignton came out on top to gain maximum points from this opening fixture. The Kingsteignton bowlers expected Buckfastleigh to come out the blocks quicker as until recently they have been bowling indoors on carpet similar to KBC's surface.

However, KBC took advantage of the situation- skipper John Saunders said it was nice to renew friendships with Buckfastleigh again.

Now for the Y div, who were away on Totnes' lawn: 24-39 to KBC (6-2 pts). C Watts 15, Martin Redfern 12; M Richards 9, Bill Beech 27.

The game started well for Martin Redfern's rink until home advantage kicked in for the home side and they pulled steadily ahead, although only mainly gaining just one shot on each end. A late rally from KBC made the final score respectable at 12-15.

KBC’s captain was suffering from foot trouble but he and his team managed a good win on his rink. This was Kingsteignton's first session on grass this year but didn't disappoint.

The first few ends were fairly even, then KBC really got into their stride, scoring 3's & 4's with Totnes replying mainly with only a single point. KBC continued in this vane after the tea break and the convincing win was well deserved.

Overall, the match was played in a good-natured, friendly manner with both sides enjoying the event played in glorious sunshine. This was a great start for KBC's Y division.
