RYAN Jones, Dan Green and Ben Steer all clocked up half-century scores or more towards Bovey Tracey 2nd XI’s 91-run derby win over Abbotskerswell.

Bovey followed their 304 for six tally against Clyst St George seven days earlier, with 303 for seven at Abbots’ expense.

Opener Jones top scored on 81 and took the running total to 175 for five. Dan Green made 55 and Ben Steer was 56 not out from 55 balls at the end.

“Getting back-to-back scores of 300-plus is a serious achievement,” said Bovey skipper Green.

“Ryan Jones set the tempo with a great innings, and everyone applied themselves in a great team effort.”

Nick Damley-Jones’ bowling figures of two for 48 from nine overs were respectable in the context of the game.

Abbots were just about in contention on 113 for four with 15 overs to go with Tom Heath and Richard Harmer (37) both well set.

What Abbots needed was a couple of big overs, which Bovey Tracey were determined not to give away.

Heath went on to make 91 not out, but after Harmer went no one reached double figures as Abbots subsided to 212 all out.

Green finished with four Abbots’ wickets for 39 runs conceded. Sam Veal had two for 51.

For Abbotskerswell player-coach Toby Codd, who this time last year was Bovey’s 1st XI captain, the game was all part of the learning curve.

“Hats off to Bovey who, despite missing key players, outplayed us and did the basics well,” said Codd.

“We can learn from how Bovey fielded, ran between the wickets and bowled to plans.

“We'll stick together and come back against Ipplepen this Saturday.”
