BOVEY Tracey rediscovered their winning touch in the Tolchards DCL A Division with a resounding eight-wicket win over Kilmington.

Skipper Seb Ansley was looking for a reaction after the loss against Torquay & Kingskerswell – and the team delivered the goods.

“Really pleased to put a statement win out there and get ourselves on track for the season,” said Ansley.

Opener Joel Seward’s patient 39 off 86 balls – three fours, lots of dots – was the best Kilmington posted in an all-out total of 147. Best of the rest were Josh Cann’s 18 and the 17 scored by Ben Fuzzard.

Bovey seamer Rob Pryke (1-20 off 8) was almost unplayable at times. Pete Bradley (3-46) and Chris Yabsley (3-11) cashed in with the old ball as Killy’s lower order struggled.

“Taking their last wickets for less than 50 runs stemmed from the pressure of our spinners but also, in part, some soft dismissals from them,” said Ansley.

Bovey had 40 overs to knock-off the runs and had more than five to spare when they did.

Opener Jake Pascoe found some balls to hit on the way to 79 not out. Hem Chetri (45) shared a stand of 87 with Pascoe that put the result beyond doubt.

“Jake batted fantastically and latched on to the poor ball when it came, ably assisted by Hem,” said Ansley.

Victory moved Bovey up to third in the table heading into this Saturday’s encounter with Heathcoat.

Bovey Tracey 2nd XI’s clash with Stoke Gabriel in the B Division was one of many to fall foul of the weather though.

Elsewhere, Chudleigh went to the top of the C West table by inflicting a 61-run defeat on Paignton 2nd XI.

Jasper Bubb, previously with Exeter, and Ben Cowling scored 32 and 44 respectively to help Chudleigh reach 88 for two. The run-making theme continued as Will Heather (59) and Raj Neelam (22) jogged along to 181 for four.

Tim Sandercombe was 22 not out in a 35-over product 224-5.

Paignton only got as far as 163-8 before their time ran out. Top five runs were negligible and by the time Ethan Hancock (33no) and Max Pedley (41) put bat to ball the game was drifting away.

Luke Quaintance (3-20), Mark Russell (0-19) and Darshan Shivakumar (2-23) were the seven-over Chudleigh bowlers largely responsible for limiting Paignton’s efforts.

Meanwhile, Ipplepen faced an early battering by Plymouth 2nd XI and were 39-4 but then Toby Alsop (27no) and skipper Sam Wakeham (26) stopped the rot then Joe Parker (27) and Noah Sutton (26no) took Pens the rest of the way there.

Plymouth had to recover from a nightmare start themselves after Warwick Green (3-14) and George Tapley (2-34) reduced them to 37-4.

Henry Alsop (2-28) and Joe Parker (2-10) contributed to Plymouth’s batting decline after Alex Hill (33) was sixth out on 111.

Lastly, South Devon’s troubled start to the C West season continued with a 59-run home defeat by Brixham.

That’s two defeats on the spin for Jonny Martin’s side, who have moved in at the bottom of the table.

Mohammed Shaikh, last season’s leading run getter in the C West, top scored with 77 in Brixham’s 20-over total of 156 for eight.

Shaikh went in three balls into the match after opener Richard Ward was removed by Sean Andrews and batted on until the 18th over. Numerous chip-ins – none greater than Tim Robinson’s 17 – helped the total along.

Josh Hammett, Jack Allen and James Hart all claimed two wickets each for South Devon.

Bradley McKee (2-26) and Mark Orchard (2-20) largely accounted for South Devon’ top five. Knocks of 21 by Allen and 24 not out from Dan Yates took the total to 97-6.
