JEWSON WESTERN LEAGUE

Shepton Mallet 1 Buckland Athletic 4

BUCKLAND Athletic won for the fourth weekend in a row when they travelled to Somerset and crossed paths with Shepton Mallet.

The only blemish in the last five games for the side currently occupying fourth place in the Western League was a midweek defeat at Sidmouth Town.

Prior to that, they beat Elburton Villa in the FA Vase and since then, they’ve won three leagues on the spin.

Matt Cusack’s side were dealt a major blow last week though as it was confirmed that Jared Lewington “has suffered a tear to the meniscus and ACL rupture which awaits a surgery decision.”

The striker was stretchered off in a recent home win over Bradford Town, the club adding: “We send our best wishes to Jared and will be supporting him throughout his recovery.”

On top of that, messages poured in on social media from current and former teammates, Buckland supporters, Bradford Town themselves and others within the football community.

In his absence, Ryan Bush is the only senior striker on the books and he was on target twice against the Mallet.

Bush got the ball rolling for the Bucks and was then joined on the scoresheet by Jake Lane and Sean Thomson before the half-time whistle went. That is now two in two for former Ivybridge Town midfielder Thomson.

He rounded off the scoring for the visitors in the latter stages of the game, making it five goals in three. The only blemish for Cusack and co was the loss of their clean sheet, home captain Paul Braithwaite grabbing a consolation in the final knockings.

As previously mentioned, Buckland are now fourth, tied on 19 points with both Torpoint Athletic and Saltash United prior to the midweek games.

The Yellows host Sidmouth Town on Wednesday 17 and then they’re at Homers Heath again on the weekend, taking on Ilfracombe Town in the Vase.
