NEITHER Bovey Tracey AFC nor Buckland Athletic were overly convincing in their respective FA Vase first round proper ties but the South Devon pair are through to the next stage all the same.
Bovey welcomed Radstock Town to the Western Counties Roofing Ground, a Somerset-based side struggling in the adjacent Western League Division One.
Having blown Western League Premier high-flyers Torpoint Athletic out of the water in Cornwall last time out, many would have expected the Moorlanders to put together another emphatic cup success.
There was only one goal in it though, the ever-reliable Ollie Aplin making the difference for Bovey.
Ben Gerring has Bovey soaring at the Peninsula League summit and their pursuit of FA Vase glory rolls on as well.
Talking of the Peninsula League and Buckland crossed paths with one of the two winless teams in the Premier East.
Bishops Lydeard have accrued just one point from an available 36 to date and yet they lead twice against Matt Cusack’s men at Darby Way.
Buckland, who themselves are enjoying a strong season to date, fired back first through defender Myles James and then it was striker Ryan Bush at the death.
With their Vase dreams extinguishing before their very eyes, the trusty forward poking one of the last kicks of the game home.
The shootout was then relatively straightforward, James, Bush and Jack Baxter converting whilst Bishops Lydeard missed their three attempts.
For both of these teams now, the second round beckons with ties set to take place on Saturday, November 8.
Bovey will host Corsham Town, of the Hellenic League Premier (step five) and Hampshire-based Millbrook visit Buckland at the VX3 Stadium, of the Wessex League Premier (step five).
At the time of writing, Corsham sit sixth in their league, whereas Millbrook are 13th, both out of 20 teams.
Looking shorter term though and both sides have midweek outings to focus on.
Tomorrow night, Bovey Tracey head to Simmons Park to take on Okehampton Argyle in the WCP League Cup, having beaten Buckland of all teams in the previous round.
Bovey beat Argyle 4-0 in the league a few weeks back and so Richard Washburn’s men will be looking for revenge.
Buckland meanwhile, take to the field on Wednesday, hosting Bridgwater United in the Les Phillips Cup.
These two have also met recently, yet another late Bush goal earning the Bucks a 2-2 draw on their travels.
