BOVEY Tracey AFC and Buckland Athletic faced different fortunes in the Jewson Western League on Saturday, August 15.
The former journeyed up to Somerset where they met Street FC at The Tannery Ground.
Kyle Strange scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet for the hosts by Jakob Dickens, Chris Barrett and Eddie Townsend, as they enjoyed a 5-2 victory.
After Bovey fell behind, Rudi McKinnon headed in an equaliser with Street then romping into a 5-1 lead. Stuart Bowker came off the bench to pull one back but it proved to be a mere consolation.
Speaking on the club’s social media page after the match, Moorlanders manager Ben Gerring said: “I didn’t think we could get worse than last week in the second half but defensively we’ve just done that.
“Defensively, we’ve got a big problem on our hands. We are struggling to deal with very simple balls in the air, we’re struggling to defend our own box.
“For me and Farks on the side, obviously being ex-defenders, it’s hurting, it’s a struggle to [watch].”
Gerring added that frank conversations would be following with phone calls to each and every player.
“We’ve got to get ready for the fight on Tuesday” too as Bovey prepare to host Brixham AFC for a midweek derby.
After that, they’re at home again on Saturday (August 22), taking on Saltash United.
Buckland meanwhile travelled down to Newquay AFC with a hugely weakened side, due to illness and unavailability.
Newquay were enjoying a strong start to the season, including a win over Bovey, whilst the Bucks entered this one off the back of a 6-0 drubbing by Barnstaple Town in the FA Cup.
Matt Cusack’s side bounced back oh so well though- after a goalless first half, they went behind via a penalty before the in-form Sammy Stayt made it 1-1 and then Jack Baxter put it on a plate for Toby Pullman to convert the winner.
These were the only two league games of the weekend with the majority of Western League clubs in FA Vase action and, as a result, Buckland have moved to the summit of the division.
The Bucks don’t play again until Saturday, August 29, when they host Bridgwater United, another high-flyer.
