BUCKLAND Athletic were beaten away from home on the first day of the new Jewson Western League season.

Matt Cusack’s side travelled to Langsford Park to face Tavistock AFC on Saturday, July 25, and lost by two goals to nil.

The Lambs are newly relegated from the Southern League and after a good summer of business, they’ll be looking for a swift return to step four.

Tavistock look the lead within half an hour courtesy of an own goal, Bucks defender George Russell diverting the ball beyond goalkeeper Mike Searle.

There were chances in the game for Buckland but they just lacked that cutting edge to beat Tavi shot-stopper Dan Holman.

Deacon Thomson doubled the home side’s lead- he was the first to react after his initial effort was kept out by Searle.

Buckland now have a quick turnaround ahead of Tuesday night’s derby clash with Bovey Tracey AFC before their first home game of the campaign on Saturday, August 1, with Torpoint Athletic in town.
