BUCKLAND Athletic have reached the third round proper of this year’s FA Vase competition and it was an away day to remember.
Travelling up in the days prior to the match, the Yellow Army took over the Isle of Wight as their side took on Cowes Sports FC.
Cowes are currently experiencing an underwhelming campaign in the Wessex Football League Premier so form favoured Buckland but home advantage was certainly with the Yachtsmen.
No Ryan Bush no problem for Matt Cusack’s side as Josiah McKayle and Toby Pullman, the two other strikers in the Bucks’ ranks, both found the back of the net.
Buckland prevailed 2-0 to put their name in the hat for the Vase and on Monday, November 2, they were drawn away step-six high-flyers Elburton Villa (sched. for Nov 28).
Jared Lewington scored the only goal of the game as Buckland beat Elburton at Haye Road in this same competition last year but Villa look much stronger this time around.
Having added prolific goalscorer Levi Landricombe to their ranks, who won the Peninsula League’s golden boot and helped Bovey Tracey AFC to the title, Elburton will definitely carry a threat.
On the flipside, this was a second clean sheet of the season for the Bucks with the previous one coming in the last round against Hamworthy Recreation.
Elsewhere on Halloween, Newton Abbot Spurs collected a much-needed three points when they dispatched Okehampton Argyle by five goals to two at The Rec.
Jesse Howe (two), Stevie Cole, Jordan Hogan and Will Hancox were on target for Spurs whilst Jacob Pickavant was controversially shown a red card for abusive language.
Also in the Peninsula League, Teignmouth AFC fell to defeat away from home, losing 3-1 at Bishops Lydeard.
On Saturday, November 7, all three teams are away- Buckland at Saltash United, Spurs at Torrington AFC and Teignmouth at Ilfracombe Town.
