BUCKLAND Athletic will look to make it three wins from three in the Western League when Wellington AFC visit them at Homers Heath on Saturday (August 9).
Matt Cusack’s side have previously dispatched of Newquay AFC and Barnstaple Town in the league, not to mention their FA Cup triumph over St. Blazey too.
These two wins have the Bucks in second in the table as one of four teams yet to drop points. Saltash United are ahead of them, thanks in part to their 7-0 thrashing of AFC St Austell, whilst Helston Athletic and Clevedon Town are also on +3 goal difference.
Wellington meanwhile have got off to a slow start, kickstarting the campaign with a defeat at Helston Athletic before then drawing with Shepton Mallet and losing to Bideford in the cup.
Buckland won 1-0 away at Wellington last season and then 4-0 on home soil- pair that with their signing of Tangerines’ star Phil Mendonca and it is the Yellows who enter this fixture as the favourites.
Talking of Mendonca and he has proved to be an astute capture by Cusack, causing headaches for the fullbacks he has faced thus far. On the opening day, having beaten his man numerous times, he set up for Luke Forward for the third goal in their 3-1 win over Newquay.
The Newton Abbot side will then have a quick turnaround, visiting Street FC at the Tannery Ground on Tuesday evening (August 12).
Elsewhere, Newton Abbot Spurs have a weekend off in the SW Peninsula League already but both Bovey Tracey AFC and Teignmouth AFC are in action.
Ben Gerring’s Bovey got their season underway last weekend with a win on their travels, the returning Ollie Aplin scoring the only goal of the game against Bishops Lydeard in less than 60 seconds.
That was an away outing and so this will be a first match at Mill Marsh Park for 2025/26 with Torridgeside AFC the visitors.
Torridegside have a loss against Ilminster Town and a win over Okehampton Argyle under their belt to date. Just four points separated them in ninth and Bovey in eighth last term, but the latter’s intriguing off-season business will have their sights set on a much higher finish.

Lastly, to Teignmouth AFC, who will spend Saturday away at Torrington AFC.
A 4-0 win on the road against Axminster Town has them flying high, making this all the more challenging for the Teigns. They themselves were beaten on opening day, although a 1-0 loss to Ilfracombe Town isn’t exactly anything to be ashamed of.
Liam Jones’ men will be hopeful of putting their first points on the board before their long-awaited return to home football the following weekend.
