BUCKLAND Athletic fought back to seize a point on their travels in the Jewson Western League.

It took just three minutes for Bridgwater United to take the lead on their own patch, Dan Dodimead converting after a long throw from Billy Tucker.

Bucks boss Matt Cusack wrote on social media that his side “started slowly” and were “on the back foot from conceding early.”

He continued, “(we) then got a foothold in the game, I thought the second goal after HT was against the run of play.”

As suggested there, it got worse before it got better for the visitors. They went into the break a goal down only for Bridgwater to strike again once play had resumed, Matt Lee with the goal.

Buckland supporters saw great belief from their side a few weeks prior away at Street FC, late goals rescuing a point, and they did the same at Fairfax Park on Saturday.

Jack Baxter halved the deficit and he is a player enjoying a rich vein of form, having scored a cracker in the FA Vase win over Ilfracombe Town as well as notching a brace on Wednesday, September 24, away at Bovey Tracey AFC in the St Luke’s Bowl.

On Twitter, Buckland wrote: “(Ben) Carter pass finds Baxter who steps a defender & fires across into the far corner.”

The second came in added time and from the penalty spot as well. With virtually the last kick of the game, Ryan Bush did what he does best and put the ball in the back of the net, earning his side a hard-earned point.

They displayed “terrific character” in the words of Cusack once again, rounding off a very busy week for the club.

Buckland are in seventh at the time of writing with 20 points to their name. They are spared a midweek fixture next and will return to action on Saturday, October 4, when they visit 16th-placed St. Blazey.
