A FOOTBALL group created to give disabled children and adults a boost in levels of exercise and socialising is coming to Newton Abbot in April.

Laura Shaw, the founder of Pro Shaws Coaching, had her own career hindered by both her mental and physical health and now she’s looking to give back to others who may be lacking support.

She grew up in Manchester and played football there before making the move down to Devon as a teen. “From there, I built my football up and ended up with Buckland, Torquay and had trials at Exeter City.

“But then unfortunately, due to my underactive thyroid diagnosis, I had to come out of football for over two years and that took a big hit on my mental health. I struggled then with identity and purpose and I crashed as a result, I didn’t know what to do with myself.”

In a place of major uncertainty herself then, Laura is now able to connect with the people that she coaches. Having previously worked in mental health services, she is not only able to share her footballing expertise but also make a positive impact off of the pitch.

She explained; “I’ve really struggled with both energy and confidence levels. This all started from my own self-esteem and social interactions so I thought, why not create an inclusive, disability-friendly group, Newton Abbot doesn’t have anything like this as far as I could see.

“It can be a challenge but it’s really rewarding at the same time. I see both their skills grow and their anxiety levels decrease which is so great and as a coach and the way I come across, I can be a role model for the kids and adults so it’s a great feeling to have.”

The pandemic made life even more difficult for the majority of people, particularly those with disabilities, “Many of whom went into complete isolation and their social skills were setback.” Laura’s training can help combat these setbacks whilst also encouraging football skills, general exercise and teamwork.

As well as helping out those who attend the sessions, Laura is hoping that one way or another, an inclusive group like hers can encourage the rest of society to extend their compassion to all.

“I just want people to understand that, it doesn’t matter if you are an outsider or not, it doesn’t matter if you’re different, everyone deserves a chance and everyone deserves to enjoy football.

“Whether you’re a volunteer, coach or a player, you do fit in. Football is for everyone. You just don’t know anyone’s background. Be kind to everyone, support people around you, just a smile in the street can make someone’s day.”

The juniors group will kickstart on Tuesday, April 7, then the adult group gets underway on Wednesday, April 8. Both take place indoors at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre from 6pm to 7pm and there will be weekly sessions.
