NEWTON Abbot Spurs and Teignmouth AFC both lifted the curtain on their respective campaigns in the SW Peninsula League Premier East on Saturday, August 8.

Spurs, who are under new management with Matt Hayden and Sam Biscoe filling the shoes of popular club figure Marc Revell, were on the road at Axminster Town on opening day.

The Tigers finished rock bottom last season with just one single point from their 30 games but that has practically no bearing on what is to come in 2026/27.

For Spurs meanwhile, it was an almost unrecognisable side with just two players in the squad who played regular football for them in 25/26.

Lewis Breslan, a Spurs stalwart, was on the bench alongside Brad Crocombe as they played out a 2-2 draw at Tiger Way.

Amongst those in the XI were brothers Sam and Will Hancox, both of whom are familiar faces at Spurs and have returned to The Rec to follow the new managers.

Jesse Howe and Tom Dunlop scored the Spurs goals in what was one of two ties in the division on the weekend.

The other was at Coombe Valley where Teignmouth played out a 2-2 draw of their own against Torridgeside AFC.

Zak Khadaroo struck twice for the home side as they got the new season up and running with a point, Tyler Evans-Ioude meanwhile scored the Torridgeside goals.

Both South Devon sides have a swift turnaround to play again on Tuesday evening (August 11), Teignmouth travelling to Crediton United and Spurs visiting newly promoted Elburton Villa, who got off to a winning start thanks to a Levi Landricombe hat-trick.

Elsewhere in the SWPL, Ilminster Town put seven past Middlezoy Rovers, Okehampton Argyle put new boys Exeter Uni to the sword and there were also victories for Ilfracombe Town, Bridport FC and Cullompton Rangers.

League action steps aside on the weekend with the pair on the road in the FA Vase, Teignmouth facing Ivybridge Town at Erme Valley and Spurs meeting Bude Town.
