NEWTON Abbot Spurs slow start to the new SW Peninsula League season continued on Saturday, August 22.

They are now winless in four league outings with their latest struggle occurring away at Bishops Lydeard.

Whilst it is obviously a clean slate for the campaign ahead, Spurs have played two of 2025/26’s bottom four and have taken just one point from those games.

Matt Hayden and Sam Biscoe’s side kickstarted the year with a 2-2 draw away at Axminster Town and they were then beaten by Bishops Lydeard on the weekend.

First half goals from Jake De Miranda and James Cottrill set the hosts on their way and although Jesse Howe was able to scrape one back for Spurs, they couldn’t avoid another defeat.

Pressure could be mounting on the managerial team with the majority of the squad from years gone by, who have been relatively successful, moving on to pastures new. Replacing them have been several players that Hayden and Biscoe previously worked alongside at Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police.

At the time of writing, victory over Bude Town in the FA Vase is the only bright spark with Spurs hoping that tomorrow’s trip to Exeter University will change that.

They are on the road again on the weekend, paying Torridgeside AFC a visit on Saturday 29.

September will then present a real opportunity for Spurs to build up a head of steam with five games, all of which are scheduled to take place at The Rec.

Bridport FC (Sat 5), Cullompton Rangers (Sat 19) and Middlezoy Rovers (Sat 26) are their league opponents whilst they meet Sticker in the FA Vase (Sat 12) and Holsworthy in the St Luke’s Challenge Cup (Tues 22).

Meanwhile, South Devon rivals Teignmouth AFC were without a game and they face Stoke Gabriel at Broadley Lane tomorrow before welcoming Middlezoy to Coombe Valley on Saturday.
