A FIRST win in five games was just what the doctor ordered for Bovey Tracey as they eased to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth Marjon in the Peninsula Premier East last night.

Central defenders Tyler Yendle and Jed Roberts both popped up to notch rare goals, with Lewis Perring and Finn Roberts joining them on the scoresheet. Theo Ramsey replied for the Students.

The Moorlanders came out of the blocks on top and had a couple of early sighters courtesy of Finn Roberts and Owen Stockton.

Perring cut in and drew a decent save from visiting keeper Gabe Smietanka before his side took the lead with 14 minutes gone.

A long throw into the penalty area was helped goalwards by young defender Yendle, whose looping header beat Smietanka and nestled into the far corner of the net.

Aaron Wellington made the travelling stopper work again on the half-hour before Ollie Aplin picked out the outside of post from point blank range – the linesman’s flag sparing the striker’s blushes.

Marjon did have the ball in the net as the half came to a close when Liam Donovan finished into the far corner, but referee Matt Redmond had already blown up for a foul on Lloyd Tucker.

That looked to spur the away side on as they briefly grew into the game after half-time, but a moment of class from Perring would ultimately make it 2-0 on the hour.

Stockton, who impressed in the middle of the park, sprayed the ball out wide to Bovey’s top scorer, who lashed in a fierce effort which caught out Smietanka at his near post.

The remaining three goals were all scored in as many minutes as the game began to reach its closing stages.

First Finn Roberts perfectly placed a free-kick into the bottom corner from 35 yards to extend the Moorlanders’ lead to three goals.

Then, from the kick-off, Marjon broke straight up the other end to allow their top scorer Ramsey to slot past home goalkeeper Dom Aplin.

Will Small’s men then went and won a corner, with substitute Jed Roberts rivalling his brother’s strike by audaciously finding the bottom corner with a first-time flick.

That would prove to be enough for Bovey, despite a couple of late scares from Alangel Joseph and Reece Brown.

After only managing one goal in their previous four fixtures, Bovey boss Small was encouraged by his side’s improved performance.

‘We were a lot better tonight,’ said Small. ‘In the warm-up it was a lot chirpier and there was a lot more noise.

‘We lacked voices on Saturday and leaders out on the pitch, but I think we had that in abundance tonight.

‘And I think we controlled the game from kick-off. It never really looked like it would be anything other than a win for us, it just took us a while to get that first goal.

‘But after we got that I felt quite comfortable – and the three points were in the bag fairly convincingly, I’d have said.’

The Moorlanders, now up to 13th in the league standings, travel to Holsworthy on Saturday (3pm).
