A WEEKEND of FA Vase action proved to be a fruitful one for Newton Abbot Spurs who booked their place in the First Round Proper on Saturday.

Having overcome competition debutants Brixham in the First Qualifying round, a 3-2 win at home to fellow Peninsula Premier East side Crediton was what did the trick this time around.

Young Nathan Hebbes got the hosts moving with just three minutes played after he steered home a cross from Charlie Johansen.

And the visitors were back on level terms with just over half an hour played when Kenny Ord’s chip made it 1-1.

But the home side put their noses back in front four minutes before the break when Adam Dyson’s delivery was converted by Liam Moseley.

In the second half, Josh Webber’s tidy finish gave the Spurs some breathing room and took the score to 3-1.

A deflected strike from Will Hamill with five minutes of normal time remaining made for a tense finish, but the hosts held on.

Following Monday’s draw for the First Round Proper, the Spurs now know they will host Wessex Football League Division One side Ringwood Town at The Rec on Saturday, October 31.

The visitors, who play at the same step of the non-league pyramid as Spurs, sit 13th in their division with two wins from their opening five games.

Yesterday evening [Wednesday], the Spurs relieved Ilfracombe Town of their unbeaten status with a 2-1 win at The Rec, despite receiving another red card.

Moseley put the hosts ahead after 12 minutes with a 25-yard strike, and player-manager Chris Metters nodded in a Joe Andrews cross with 39 minutes gone.

With moments left it looked as though the home side would finish with 11 men on the pitch in back-to-back games, before Cieran Bridger lunged his way to an early bath.

The previous Wednesday, a late show from 10-man Spurs ensured they secured another three league points at home to Honiton Town.

The game was just four minutes old when Nat Hawkins put the visitors in front, and the task got even harder when Kevin Dadd was given his marching orders for the second time this season after half an hour.

Charlie Johansen had a chance to equalise from the spot on the hour but couldn’t capitalise, and it was substitute Dean Stevens who hauled his side level with 10 to play.

When Spurs were given another penalty with just moments left, Stevens made no mistake to wrap up a brace and a 2-1 win.

Plymouth Marjon are Saturday’s scheduled visitors to The Rec (3pm).

Elsewhere in the FA Vase on Saturday, Bovey Tracey narrowly missed out on a place in the next round after a 2-1 defeat away at Longwell Green.

The travellers took a 24th-minute lead when Jordan Ewing found the net for the third successive game.

But a touch of fortune for the hosts saw them equalise six minutes before the break – a looping cross catching out the visiting keeper.

And the Western League Division One outfit scored what ultimately proved to be the winner in the 75th minute to knock Bovey out after their First Qualifying Round bye.

The Moorlanders were unlucky not to take points from yesterday [Wednesday] evening’s game at home to Elburton Villa.

The hosts found themselves 3-0 down at half-time through Sam Stevens, Stuart Morgan and an effort on the break.

But a quick-fire double from substitute Jamie Orchard got the Moorlanders back in the game, before a nasty clash of heads saw play halted while the players involved were treated.

An Elburton free-kick saw them regain a two-goal advantage and ultimately win the match, despite Sean Finch’s late penalty.

Bovey make the trip to Holsworthy on Saturday (3pm).

In the Devon Football League North & East on Saturday, Teignmouth maintained their unbeaten record with a 5-2 win away at Chudleigh Athletic.

A hat-trick from Jay James and an Ashley Donohue brace did the damage for the travelling side, who now sit one point behind leaders Exwick Villa with a game in hand.

Mathew Carroll and Ben Stephenson got on the scoresheet for Chudleigh, who sit 11th with four points from six games.

Elsewhere in the division, St Martins scored three without reply to condemn Liverton United to defeat at Minster Park. The goals came courtesy of Ben Harris, Jonny Holding and Kevin Pike.

In the DFL South & West division, two late goals from PAFC Development meant that Newton Spurs Reserves had to make do with a draw away in Plymouth.

The visiting side had found the net through Ashley Dove and Carl Roles, but 88th and 94th-minute efforts from Theo Ramsey and substitute Haydn Purslove respectively ensured the points would be shared.

Meanwhile, the local derby between Buckland Athletic Reserves and Kingsteignton Athletic was postponed.
