ON the hottest weekend of the year, Teignmouth Golf Club held their 36-hole Club Championships with 18 holes played on both Saturday and Sunday.

After Saturday’s round the players were seeded for Sunday’s round, with the players grouped based on their Saturday performance.

A total of 142 men entered the Men’s Club Championship and, after round one, Sean Mason’s gross 68 gave him a four-shot lead over Ian Brown. In the handicap competition, Bob Collier and Alan Bell shared the lead with nett 67’s with eight players within three shots of them.

In the Ladies’ Club Championship, after Saturday’s round, Hannah Stephens and Irene Munday both recorded a gross 89 with Sally Tyler two shots behind with a gross 91. Lady captain Max Anderson led Division Two with a gross 100.

Irene Munday and Sarah Plunkett both finished with a nett 74 in the handicap competition and Anne Steele Arnett led Division Two with a nett 68.

Sunday started with a number of withdrawals, due to positive Covid tests, sickness and the weather, requiring a few adjustments to start times and grouping.

With all remaining players out on the course the ladies reached the halfway stage first with overnight leader Hannah Stephens having taken a five-shot lead.

The back nine saw Sally Tyler fighting back to be two shots behind on the 18th tee but a birdie on the 18th for Hannah sealed a three-shot victory.

In Division Two, lady captain Max Anderson carded her second gross 100 of the weekend to be a clear winner. In the handicap competition, Hannah claimed the Division One double, pipping Charisse Crawford by one shot, while in Division Two Kate Eustace overturned a three-shot deficit to beat Anne Steele Arnett by two shots.

In the Men’s Club Championship, the best score of the day was carded by Jeremy Binch with a gross 72 to give him second place on countback from Ian Brown, but there was no catching Sean Mason who maintained his four-shot advantage to be crowned Club Champion.

In the handicap competition, Ant Stephens recorded a nett 68 to take the Bob Naish Salver on countback from Alan Bell and ensure celebrations in the Stephens’ household.
