DEVON clubs sent some of their finest foursomes pairings to Dainton Park Golf Club for this year’s Men’s Inter-Club Foursomes.

It's a competition steeped in history, with the Devon County Golf Union Inter-Club Foursomes Cup dating all the way back to 1912 when it was won by J. Penn-Milton & R.H. Blundell of Yelverton Golf Club and played at Tavistock Golf Club.

The Devon County Golf Union Inter-Club Foursomes Handicap Cup first played for in 1947. The winners were Rev. S. Hackett & H. Colin from Torquay Golf Club on their home turf.

There was a fresh feel to the event too, with the competition being played over 18 holes for the first time, rather than the traditional 36. As well as the two magnificent trophies there were prizes for first and second place in each division.

Dainton Park, presented in immaculate condition, proved an excellent test for a field packed with low handicappers. DevonGolf President Roger Worthington got proceedings underway as the first groups headed out, and it turned out the early starters had set a mark that no one could catch.

Dan Brown and Luke Burchell of Downes Crediton posted the day’s best scratch score of 74 and then faced a nervous wait to see if anyone could overhaul them.

Jason Marshall and Matthew Lyne (Stover) came closest with 76, while Philip Lyons and Rick Osborne of Churston claimed third place with 77. Saunton’s David Holyoak and Mark Snape were fourth on 78.

The Stover duo made sure they didn’t leave empty-handed, adding the handicap prize to their runner-up finish in the scratch event. Playing off PH4, they returned a nett 72 to take top spot.

Ben and Charlie Harding of Exminster, playing off PH11, also recorded nett 72 to finish second. Downes Crediton’s Darren Goble and Paul Luxton (PH9) took third with nett 73, edging out Boringdon Park’s Andy Taylor and Wayne Tulley on countback.

A huge thank you to everyone at Dainton Park Golf Club, where the course was a credit to the greens team and the hospitality helped make it another successful DevonGolf day.
