Following his solid performance and a sixth place finish at the Senior British Athletic Championships and World Trials, Liverton javelin thrower Steve Turnock was invited to compete as a guest at the Welsh International Athletics meeting.

'Going into the competition I didn't feel much pressure as I was a guest and so I felt I could concentrate on my preparation and throwing,' said Turnock (pictured).

'I opened with a solid 64m throw, but was put under pressure from the senior England thrower who threw 67m in round two.

'I came back with 68.65m in round three then followed with a 67.66m and finished with a 65m throw to win the competition!

'Apart from the international athletes taking part, the winner of the BUCS Championships was also competing as a guest so it was great to win such a big competition against these senior throwers who are all ranked above me.'

Turnock, who is still only 20, has had a great season so far, winning two national medals, a silver at the Midland Counties and now this big win at the Welsh International meeting.

He now hopes to improve on his pb at the South West Inter Counties and the UKA Throws Fest, in Bedford, later this month.MORE SPORT IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
