Ollie Tyler, a Year 7 student at South Dartmoor Community College, won the acclaimed MSA Welsh C plate in the Honda Cadet Kart Class at the Welsh National Championship.
The championship at the Llandow kart track, south Wales, was held over two days, made up of timed qualifying, qualifying heats and finals.
Ollie, from Heathfield, managed to get his kart in second place on the final grid, with the weather closing in and rain falling heavily.
After a fine start Ollie held first place for just one lap and ended up closely following the number 22 kart for some nine laps, never putting a tyre out of place.
Reaching speeds in excess of 50mph, the front two kept racing clean and fair with only inches between them at times.
On the final lap, Ollie made a breathtaking move on a sharp right hand bend to take the lead.
With half the track still ahead of him Ollie didn’t ease off, elbows out and battling to the chequered flag to take the win by just three-hundredths of a second.
Ollie can now display the C plate on his kart in future races as it is the only one throughout the UK for this class.
Meanwhile, Ollie is looking for sponsorship. Anybody in a position to help is asked to call 01626 834544.
