NEWTON Abbot Rugby Club’s final home game of the season allowed them to honour the life of Dave ‘Digger’ Wharton, who passed away at the end of 2025.

He was “A massive part of the club and was also well-known throughout Kingsteignton” in the words of Director of Rugby Mike Saxton.

The All Whites came out victorious against Plymstock Oaks which saw them claim the inaugural Digger Memorial Trophy, a “lovely and fitting” wooden prize given Digger’s work in the timber trade.

“It was a feel-good moment” for everyone as, with Digger’s family and friends in attendance, those that loved him could celebrate his life.

Another former player, Vaughan Hosking, also passed away recently so it was a chance for the club to pay tribute to him as well.
