Newton Abbot U11s travelled to Kingsbridge, on Sunday, to take part in the annual county festival and came away with some silverware for their efforts.

A slow start in the pool stage saw them suffer two 10-nil defeats at the hands of Barnstaple and Paignton, and a third would have meant an early exit.

However, they rallied to chalk-up a 25-nil win over Totnes – with Luca Carasco (two), Josh Hughes, Fraser McMeekan and Ollie Pead the try scorers. This saw them progress to the plate competition and a semi-final against Tiverton.

Playing up the slope in the first half, Newton maintained possession well and kept the opposition pinned in their own half.

Max Naldrett opened the scoring for the All Whites and the lead was soon doubled by Jed Griffin, before they conceded a try on the stroke of half-time.

It was game on in the second half and Tivvy soon levelled to set up a tense finale.

Newton, now playing with the slope, bombarded the blue defence which eventually gave way and Aaron Bennett touched down to book Newton’s place in the final against Torquay, who overcame Honiton on the other side of the draw.

Playing up the slope, Newton defended tirelessly in the first half of the final, the teams turning around nil-nil at half-time.

The downhill advantage was again put to good use in the second half and a willingness to move the ball wide made space for Newton speedsters Carasco (two) and Griffin to give their side a healthy lead. Ben Butland then crashed over from short-range and Pead ghosted through to seal a 25-nil victory, and with it the festival plate.
