Sunday saw Bideford Ladies and their junior girls travel to Rackerhayes to enjoy a day of women and girls’ rugby.
The U18s were up first, and with players playing out of position, competed in a heavily contested match which finished 15-26 to the visitors.
Short of players, the U15s teamed up with a mixture of other teams to play some sevens’ games.
Meanwhile, the U13s played their fixture on the main pitch in front of the grandstand, which was refereed by All Whites’ 14-year-old Jess Cooper, who controlled the game impeccably.
The women took to the pitch for the final game of the day.
The visitors were only able to conjure up 13 players, so with 19, the All Whites agreed to playing 12-a-side.
At half-time, the score was 22-17 in favour of the hosts.
After the break, more tries came, mainly around the fringes where gaps were opening up.
The game ended 44-32 to Newton which, with the much needed bonus point, means they finished runners-up in the league in their first season.
Eight tries were scored by the home side – three by captain and fly-half Sian Brooks, two by wing Tanya Cann and one apiece for prop Alana Riley, number 8 Emma Jones and inside-centre Zoe Lewis, who joined the team on loan from Paignton.
Newton Abbot Ladies and all three junior girls’ sections will be recruiting during the summer. For details about joining any of the female sections, or taking part in the touch-rugby sessions, email [email protected] or [email protected].
