TEIGNMOUTH Rugby Club hosted the second annual Estuary Cup, sponsored by Ohana Beauty JV, on Saturday May 11. The competition, organised by Teignmouth Ladies Rugby co-captain Jane McLellan, saw five local teams compete in a one-day tournament.

The day kicked off with hosts, and cup holders, Teignmouth starting strongly, emphatically beating Plymstock Albion Oaks 43-5. Teignmouth’s tries were scored by Beth Wreford, Leah Harman (2) and Chloe Sutcliffe (2), then Wreford kicked three conversions and Harman converted one.

Teignmouth’s second game against a Barbarians side was much closer, but the Teigns ran out winners by five points with Wreford, Emily Sutcliffe and Roxanne Wilson crossing the line.

However, Bideford were too strong in Teigns’ third game, winning 12-0. Then, in the final game of the tournament, Okehampton proved themselves worthy champions. Having beaten all the other opposition, they overcame Teignmouth 40-7 with Rachel Marshall scoring the only points for the defending champions by converting her own try.

Player of the tournament was Lily Andrews from Topsham Tempests, who played for the Barbarians Team. Lily showed the true spirit of rugby, playing for other teams when they were short and displayed the core rugby values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

‘Thanks to all the teams, players, Teignmouth Rugby Club and the Devon Referee Society for supporting local women’s rugby. The tournament really epitomised the spirit of rugby with all teams playing with obvious enjoyment of the game and helping each other out’ said Teignmouth Ladies Rugby captain Jo Bowery.
