NEWTON Abbot RFC’s wait for a win on the road continues after they were beaten 27-12 by Barnstaple Athletic.

The All Whites last won away from Rackerhayes on March 1 last year when Teignmouth were overturned 13-8 on Bitton Park.

Hopes were high heading to Barnstaple as the home side had lost four in a row home and away.

It was pretty clear by half time at Pottington that Newton’s record was not going to improve as they were 27-5 down by then.

Victory over visiting Newton Abbot moved Barnstaple ahead of their guests and up to seventh in a table of 12. The All Whites are six points and two places clear of the relegation zone.

Barnstaple shot into the lead with a second-minute try from centre Kyran McManus. Fin Body added a second on the 10-minute mark.

The four-score bonus point was safely stashed after 35 minutes thanks to further tries from Joe Hastie and Alex Rowe. McManus converted one of them.

And when Haydn Gosling slid over a minute before half time, Barnstaple were 27-5 ahead in in the driving seat.

It seemed Barnstaple were heading for a runaway win, but their scoring touch deserted them in the second half. Newton scored the only points of the second half as Barum clinched a 27-12 victory.

The Newton Abbot try scorers were Jack Sweeney and Josef Webber. Jake Monnington kicked a conversion.

Newton Abbot RFC are at home to Kingsbridge this Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Teignmouth RFC, who had no game last Saturday, are at home to South West Two promotion chasers Tiverton.

New Cross, washed off away to Exeter Engineers in Devon Two North & East, are away to Cullompton 2nd XV.
