TEIGNMOUTH RFC ran into unbeaten South West Two leaders Weston-super-Mare with predictable results.

Weston showed why they are 24 points ahead of the chasers with a resounding 69-12 win over the Teigns.

As Weston won 57-18 at Bitton Park when the sides met first time around, the outcome was hardly a surprise.

The Teignmouth forwards matched Weston well in the set pieces and managed a couple of well-earned tries.

Dan Hayward scored the first try just before half time when Teignmouth worked the ball up the pitch and Kai Clayton was brought down just short of the line. Hayward retrieved the ball found a gap to score.

Try number two was from a line-out, followed by a maul, which Weston defended well. The ball was passed down the line to Jack Bowen, who spotted an opportunity to tear through to score.

George Franklin, the Teignmouth captain, said he was glad to get this game out of the way and concentrate on climbing away from the bottom three.

“Weston are a very strong team so it was always going to be difficult to get anything from the game,” said Franklin.

“There were some good individual performances – and we played well during periods – but I guess the main positive is we don’t have to play Weston again.”

Man of the Match was awarded to Pete Bilham who shone in defence and attack.

This is now 14 wins from 14 for Weston who are leading the way on 70 points.

Teignmouth meanwhile sit eighth having won 5 and lost nine games to date. They are level on points with ninth-placed Penzance & Newlyn and four clear of North Petherton in tenth.

Teignmouth RFC are at home to third-placed Okehampton this Saturday, who lost to Ivybridge last time out.
